Growing up, Diwali wasn’t just a holiday—it was the festival of light, joy, and connection. It was a time when my whole family gathered to create something magical. We made homemade Diwali delicacies together, filling the kitchen with laughter and delicious aromas. My dadi guided us through recipes, my cousins and I had our own “important” roles, and my mom experimented with new treats. We would also spend hours crafting intricate Rangolis at our doorstep. Everyone had a part to play, creating a beautiful, joyful atmosphere that I still cherish.
But, somewhere along the way, Diwali started to feel different. These days, it seems more transactional and focused on gift-giving rather than genuine connection and care. I notice people hesitating to visit each other, perhaps worried about formalities or the expectation of elaborate gifts. Dhanteras, once a day for reflecting on our well-being, has now become all about buying gold or gadgets. Diwali feels a bit quieter, almost lonely, as simple, joyful traditions fade away.
This year, I’m inspired to rediscover traditional Diwali celebrations that focus on Diwali traditions like family gatherings, homemade treats, and meaningful moments. If you’re feeling the same, join me in celebrating in ways that feel more heartfelt, connected, and meaningful. Sharing below some ideas for you to get inspired.
Traditional yet Healthy
Diwali Delicacies to
Savor with Family
For me, the magic of Diwali begins in the kitchen. There’s something deeply fulfilling about making Diwali treats at home with family and friends. It brings back the sense of closeness and comfort I remember from childhood. At home, you also know all the ingredients, which is pretty vague outside. This year, I’ll try some new recipes that are both delicious and healthy, and I’m excited to share them with loved ones.
Diwali with Family: Fun Game Night for Laughter and Connection
One of my favorite Diwali memories is the laughter-filled moments shared while playing games. This year, instead of fireworks or late-night parties, I’m planning a cozy Diwali game night with close friends and family gathering. We’ll keep it simple—choosing games that bring us together, make us laugh, and allow us to reconnect.
If you’re thinking of hosting your own, here are some fun game ideas for a memorable Diwali night.
The Joy of Rangoli:
Crafting Together
Creating a Rangoli design each year has always been a favorite Diwali tradition of mine. This year, I’m planning to explore new designs and maybe even add personal toucahes. Rangoli is such a beautiful way to welcome Diwali and create something vibrant and unique. Inspired to add a splash of color to your celebrations?
Here’s a collection of beautiful Rangoli designs that might spark some ideas.
Meaningful Diwali Gift Ideas: Gifting from the Heart
This Diwali, I want to move away from the expectation of “big” gifts and offer more personal and meaningful presents. It could be a book, an educational game for younger cousins, or even a consecrated lamp that brings peace and positivity to their space. Meaningful gifts don’t have to be elaborate—they just need to show you care.
Ending the Night with Calm and Clarity
Instead of wrapping up Diwali with a loud party, I’m choosing to close the night quietly with a simple puja or moment of meditation. This expresses gratitude and brings a sense of calm into the evening, for me. If you’re also seeking a peaceful end to the festivities, you’re welcome to join us for a Chandra Dhyana session on October 31, where we’ll come together for the new moon meditation.
Have Diwali celebrations drifted away for you and your family also?
